It is a blueprint to ensure the goal is well considered, planned and actioned.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SMART<\/strong>\u00a0stands for;\u00a0<strong>S<\/strong>pecific,\u00a0<strong>M<\/strong>easurable,\u00a0<strong>A<\/strong>ctionable,\u00a0<strong>R<\/strong>elevant,\u00a0<strong>T<\/strong>imely.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Specific &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>When a goal is specific, it is clear and concise \u2013 there is little room for ambiguity. This creates a clarity of mind that promotes attention and focus.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The goal and its benefits can be clearly articulated. The attainment of the goal can be envisioned and its benefits palpable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Measurable &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>There is a saying attributed to Peter Drucker that;<strong>\u00a0<em>\u201c<\/em><\/strong><em>If you can&#8217;t measure it, you can&#8217;t improve it.<strong>\u201d \u00a0<\/strong><\/em>The ability to measure progress towards attaining a goal is critical to maintaining motivation. It provides feedback that promotes persistence. It also provides an opportunity to recalibrate the goal and\/or to modify actions required to achieve the goal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Actionable &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>Goals are not achieved through will alone \u2013 effective action is required.<\/p>\n<p>If actions implemented are not sustainable and\/or do not create progress towards goal attainment; time and energy is wasted, undermining self-efficacy.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence based practice can provide confidence that any actions undertaken should result in progress towards goal attainment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Relevant &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>Purpose and relevance are critical to ensuring that motivation can be sustained to achieve a goal that is valued &#8211; otherwise, why would you bother?<\/p>\n<p>It is also rare that someone will be inspired to achieve another person\u2019s goal (except where there is alignment with that person\u2019s values and goals).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Timely &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>To create accountability around achieving a goal, it should be time framed. The time frame should be challenging, but realistic.
